• 1. modeling

each design starts as a 3d model in autodesk maya, where every detail is carefully refined. proportions are adjusted, expressions are tested, and the overall form is polished to ensure the design will translate beautifully into a physical keycap. depending on complexity, this stage can take 1–2 weeks before the model is ready for test printing.

  • 2. printing

the master sculpt is created with a resin 3d printer. from there, adjustments are made and test prints are repeated—sometimes up to 10 times—until the design is just right.

  • 3. mold making

using the master print, dozens of molds are carefully created using platinum silicone, which captures every tiny detail of the sculpt. the silicone is poured and then cured inside a pressure pot to ensure a smooth, bubble-free finish. these molds form the foundation for casting multiple keycaps while maintaining the precision of the original design.

  • 4. multishot casting

this step is the most time-consuming part of the process! urethane resin is carefully dyed and placed into the mold using fine tools, with each color poured as its own separate layer. every layer must cure for about 1 hour inside a pressure pot before the next can be added. because of this, casting a single batch of 15–20 keycaps can take up to 5 days.

  • 5. demolding

after casting, each mold is carefully opened to reveal a freshly made artisan keycap. at this stage, we give each keycap a preliminary inspection, checking for overall shape, color, and quality, and categorize them into a or b grades. this helps us identify which pieces meet our highest standards and which may need additional attention before finishing.

  • 6. sanding

using varying grits of sandpaper, each keycap undergoes 2–3 rounds of careful, manual sanding. this process smooths out all edges and undersides, removing any small imperfections from casting and ensuring a consistent, even finish. attention is given to every curve and surface so that the keycap feels as polished and comfortable as it looks.

  • 7. quality check

as orders arrive at lbc hq, each keycap is carefully inspected for quality, ensuring colors, details, and finishes meet our standards. once perfect, the keycaps are thoughtfully packaged to protect them during shipping, so they arrive looking just as adorable as when they left the studio.

  • 8. drop off

once all keycaps are polished and packaged, they’re dropped off at the post office, ready for their journey. we carefully label each package and double-check everything to make sure it arrives safely. we can’t wait for these little creations to reach their new homes and bring a touch of joy to your desk!
